The Air Force Museum is 'one of New Zealand's premier visitor attractions.' All together the Air Force Museum has 28 aircraft on display combined with many other hands on displays. The Museum is situated in Wigram which is only a 15 minute drive away from Christchurch and is on 3 main bus routes.

The History of the Air Force Museum is a recent history as the museum only opened in 1987. The area had long before 1987 been associated with aviation going as far back as 1916 whenSir Henry Wigram founded his private flying school. In 1923 the area was purchased by the New Zealand government and was used as a air force base until 1995.

Among the aircraft on display are the, Auster Mk 7c (Antarctic),Aerospace CT4B Airtrainer, De Havilland DH100 Vampire FB5 NZ5767, North American Harvard Mk 3, North American P-51D Mustang, Sopwith Pup Replica, Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk 16E, De Havilland DH115 Vampire T11, De Havilland DH104 Devon, De Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver, Douglas C-47B Dakota, Avro 626, Avro Anson, BAC 167 Strikemaster, The Air Force Museum is open every day except for Christmas day from 10am to 5pm. Admission ranges from $15 for an adult to $5 for children.

Christchurch Gondola The Christchurch Gondola is now a romantic boat ride like you would expect to experience in Venice,but a massive ski life type gondola which will raise you far above sea level in comfort and allow you to enjoy the spectacular views of Christchurch, the coastline,harbor and mountains on the way. All in all the gondola travels 945 meters and rises almost 500 meters above sea level as you rise towards the summit which also happens to be a extinct volcano.

Once you reach the summit of the Port Hills there are attractions waiting for you which include the Time Tunnel. The 'Time Tunnel' will show you how the Banks Peninsula was formed as well as educating you about life for people who made the original settlement in New Zealand in 1850. There are also nature walkways
to be enjoyed which range in length from 1 hour to 1½ hours.

You can get to the Gondola experience by taking a bus or travelling by car. The Gondola operates from 1st October to 31st March and prices range from $18 for an adult to $8 for a child. A value family ticket is also available for $44 which is great value. All in all this is an attraction that should not be missed when you visit Christchurch.
