Christchurch and the Antarctic

Christchurch has always had a strong relationship with the Antarctic. In 1911 and 1912 Robert Falcon Scott used Christchurch as his last base before making his trip to the Antarctic. Christchurch was used by a naval and air base by the United States during operation Deep Freeze.

The relationship between Christchurch and the Antarctic is a deep-seated one as earlier this Century several expeditions left Christchurch for the Antarctic. Included in these expeditions are the expedition of Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton who used Christchurch as their launching point for their trip to the Antarctic.

Robert Falcon Scott was the most famous of the Polar explorers. Scott is most famous for his fatal attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. While he did reach the South Pole, a Norwegian team had already succeeded.

The connection between Christchurch and the Antarctic was further cemented when the United States began Operation Deep Freeze in 1955. During this operation Christchurch was used as a naval and airbase for planes and ships heading South to the Antarctic.

Today Christchurch is the gateway for the National Science Foundation's U.S. Antarctic Program and also the New Zealand and Italian Antarctic programs
