Christchurch Tramway

Christchurch Tramway is an inner city tram system which is an ideal way to travel around Christchurch and to see the attractions, history and everything else that the 'Garden City' has to offer while listening to a commentary which points out interesting buildings, history and some of the cities best features.

The electric trams were introduced to Christchurch in 1905 and within a short period of time they became central to the city's transport system. Prior to these electric trams there were horse drawn trams and steam powered trams. Today all of the trams have been restored to their former glory. By 1954 the trams disappeared from Christchurch.

It wasn't until 1995 that the trams were reintroduced to Christchurch due mainly to the Tramway Historical Society. The new system is a 2.5 kilometre loop around Christchurch which takes in the following sites Cathedral Square, Aquarium of Discovery, The Arts Centre, Botanic Gardens, Canterbury Museum, Punting on the Avon, Victoria Square, and New Regent Street and many many
others.

The trams from daily from 9am to 9pm from November to March and from 9am to 6pm from April to October. The admission charge is NZ$12.50 and the ticket is valid for two days.
